Shepard & Haven, LLP is a Martindale-Hubbell AV-rated law firm formed in 1982 by Sacramento natives Ronald R. Haven and Kenneth B. Shepard. Since its formation, Shepard & Haven has been involved in various facets of insurance defense litigation, including employment matters (wrongful termination, sexual harassment and discrimination), professional errors and omissions, products liability, business and real estate matters, excess liability coverage issues, public entities and workers compensation matters. Shepard & Haven practices in all California State and Federal courts as well as the United States Supreme Court.
After passing the bar in 1974, Ronald R. Haven practiced in the office of the Attorney General of the State of California, handling governmental entity lawsuits on behalf of the state and its agencies. In 1975, he went into private practice with Barrett, Newlan & Matheny, an insurance defense firm, and has been in private practice ever since. Throughout his career, Mr. Haven, a founding partner of Shepard & Haven, has successfully represented clients in more than 100 trials. In 1986, he argued before the United States Supreme Court in Asahi v. Superior Court, a landmark case involving jurisdiction over international firms, and widely considered to be on the cutting edge of legal theory. As a result, he was invited to join a national delegation of attorneys and judges on a trip to various Pacific Rim nations in an effort to promote mutual understanding and respect through the exchange of information and ideas with governmental, legal and business leaders. Mr. Haven is A-V rated, and a member of ABOTA.
Prior to attending law school, Kenneth B. Shepard was a supervising adjuster for Underwriters Adjusting Company. After passing the bar in 1974, he began practicing insurance defense litigation. Mr. Shepard has been practicing various areas of insurance defense for more than 27 years, and has successfully represented clients in more than 50 trials. As a founder of Shepard & Haven, Mr. Shepard has been with the firm since its inception in 1982. In 1997, Mr. Shepard successfully defended a development corporation before the California Supreme Court in Toland v. Sunland Housing Group, Inc., a landmark case that essentially abolished the doctrine of peculiar risk.
